This is Ardee

#ArdeeDerby pencilled in for this Sunday

Having fallen foul of the weather earlier this month, the Ardee derby between Square United and Ardee Celtic has been rescheduled for this coming Sunday.

The match will be played on Sunday March 26th at 2.30pm at the Boys School Field. The clash – which always draws a big crowd – has huge ramifications for both sides in their respective battles against relegation and for the title.

Square are looking to avoid demotion to the third tier and in their last outing eight days ago they were handed a boost in that effort as Evan Farrell’s first half goal earned them a 1-1 draw against Johnstown. That point represented just their second point gained on home soil all season.

Ardee Celtic, meanwhile, are pushing hard for promotion to the top flight and are very much in the mix for top spot but face stern competition from OMP United, Black Bull and Enfield Celtic. OMP didn’t play over the weekend as their fixture against Square – slated for the Boys School Field – fell foul to the weather.

The Deesiders haven’t played a fixture in three weeks – it will be four by the time Sunday rolls around – while Square’s game against Johnstown was their only outing in the last six weeks.

Forecasts for the coming week suggest that there should be no issue with a pitch that continually suffers from the elements. Any moderate to heavy level of rainfall can tend to deem the surface unplayable.

That should all change as of next season when the Square United first team start playing their home matches at the new pitch which has been laid at Ardee Community School.

The last time the two sides met in Division One, two late goals from Robbie Reynolds and Gareth Kane earned Celtic a 3-3 draw. After Stephen O’Brien’s opener, a brace from Andrew Egan and one from Brian Corcoran had put United in command.
