TY Students from O’Fiaich Institute of Further Education were awarded their certificates today for successfully completing the Create the Great in You (CGY) Mentoring Programme – an initiative set up by Ardee man Mark McCormack.

‘Create The Great In You’ is a social enterprise which was conceived by McCormack – mentoring young men to work through the tough times and create better days ahead.  They aim to combat the societal disadvantages that restrict them from reaching their potential and to provide a platform for males to share their stories and find mutual inspiration in their common struggles.

Aside from that, Create The Great in You also offers six-week mentoring programmes, in which students from O’Fiach College have recently taken part in. They underwent comedy and poetry workshops and four students – Jessica Bond, Josh Valley, Jake Corbett and Caitlin Kenneway – today picked up certificates for their mentoring, communication, collaboration and creativity skills.

Held the Comhaltas Centre in Dundalk on Monday morning, former governor of Mountjoy Prison John Lonergan was in attendance alongside other patrons Dr Kevin Howard, Dr Bernadette Brereton (DKIT), Donal McCormack (Tulsa) and Dr Alison Lennon. Dundalk FC centre back Patrick Barrett awas also there to show his support, as was Ardee councillor Dolores Minogue.

Among the attendees today was local Independent councillor Maeve Yore. She told ThisIsArdee.ie that she was really enthused by what she saw. “There was such a positive atmosphere this morning from the students, teachers and mentors and I feel this programme could give young people the necessary coping tools and skills they need in this ever changing world.

“I spoke to some of the students and asked how they got on and they absolutely loved it and hope there are more courses rolled out so that’s a testament that it works. I know this is just the start of something worthwhile,” she remarked.

CGY offers two programmes one for TY Students and one for men of all ages where men get an opportunity to discuss important topics that include relationships, careers, mentoring, justice and much more.
