Late goal mere consolation as Square downed by Athboy
Square United suffered an away reverse for the second straight week on Sunday afternoon as Athboy Celtic came out with a 3-1 win at the Convent Grounds in North East Football League Division 1.
Andy Rogers, who returned to the Square starting eleven having missed last week’s defeat against Enfield, scored what turned out to be nothing more than a consolation for United. However – despite two straight losses – the Ardee side remain in third in the second tier.
While there was very little between the sides during the first half, Athboy were able to go into the break with an advantage. Before the opener, Paric Malone was forced into making a fine save from Celtic stiker Ollie Hamzat. 19 minutes had been played when the Square netminder pushed Hamzat’s strike onto the bar.
The visitors did force home goalkeeper Paul Sheridan into a couple of saves as they looked to counterattack. Hamzat went close again with a header before he opened the scoring for Athboy. He got on the end of Karl Larkin’s flick on and directed past Malone and into the bottom corner.
Cian Quinn scored his fifth of the campaign to double the lead ten minutes into the second half, his effort hitting the net via the post. Before the midway point of the half, it was 3-0. Brendan Milligan rose highest to head home a cross after Square cleared a corner.
United hit back in the last 15 minutes. Milligan lost possession and Rogers was able to finish. They looked more likely as the game neared it’s end, but it was too little too late.
SQUARE UNITED: Paric Malone, Stefan Halpenny, Martin Duffy, Paudy Clarke, Jonny Sheridan, Andy Rogers, Andrew Egan, Daire McConnon, Chris Kelly, Alan Kirk.
