Rovers’ Paddy Sheelan Shield final set for Thursday
Hunterstown Rovers will contest their Paddy Sheelan Shield final against O’Raghallaighs this Thursday evening in Darver.
With the regular league season over with and Championship concerns out of the way, Rovers will face off against the men from Drogheda for the Shield. Jim Mathews’ side will hope to go one better than last year, when the lost the final of the same competition to Newtown Blues in Tullyallen.
On Saturday, Rovers booked their place in the final of the Division 1 promotion playoff. They will face the Blues or St Josephs (who play tonight in the second semi-final) for a place in Division 1 in 2018.
The Shield final has been on the ice since May, when Hunterstown and O’Raghallaigs beat Geraldines and Cooley Kickhams in their respective semi-finals.
The team from Pairc Baile Fiach have also seen off Oliver Plunketts and Na Piarsaigh en route to the Shield final. They dropped down to the secondary competition after losing all three matches played in the Paddy Sheelan Cup group stage.
One game away from promotion in the league, Rovers began their league campaign with a swashbuckling 2-13 to 0-07 win over the O’Raghallaighs at the Gaelic Grounds. Ryan Burns and Alan Landy hit 1-04 and 1-03 respectively, and Hunterstown will feel confident of recreating the trick with Burns now back in action following the serving of his suspension.
