Ex-Meath U21 boss Sean Barry named new Marys manager
Former Meath Under 21 manager Sean Barry will take the reigns at Ardee St Marys for the 2018 season.
The new man was ratified at the club’s 2017 AGM held on Wednesday evening. He signs on initially for one year. The manager takes over from Hugh Durrigan who left the club in September.
Barry will be assisted by selectors Wayne McCarthy – a former Dublin player – and ex-Marys and Louth man Alan Rooney, who returns to the senior set-up as a selector just over 12 months since leaving the senior management team.
In 2017, Barry took charge of Donaghmore/Ashbourne where they finished fourth in a group of six teams in the Championship group stage. The club also finished sixth in the 14 team A Football League Division 1. Barry has also taken charge of Meath’s junior team and Simonstown Gaels.
He took over the reigns at Donaghmore/Ashbourne having been part of the management team previously, working under Sean Kelly.
Speaking at the AGM on Wednesday, club chairman Mickey Rooney, who will continue in the role in 2018, said Barry would look to instill an attacking philosophy into the side. “We want the club to be playing with style. Some games you have to adapt. But I’d like to see the going forward as an attacking team.
Asked from the floor whether Barry was successful, Rooney said, “Yes, he’s successful.” It is understood Barry was keen to commit to the Ardee club for two years, but he has signed initially for the 2018 campaign only.
“He showed a great interest in coming and he knew a fair bit about the club. He was keen to come here,” Rooney continued.
