New Ardee Tidy Towns chairman Jim Tenanty and secretary Michael Farrelly were in Skerries on Tuesday evening for the Tidy Towns Regional Awards presentations, where they picked up Ardee’s silver medal for their 2017 showing.

Pictured above, Tenanty and Farrelly received their medal and framed certificate from Seán Kyne TD who is Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment alongside Niall O’Callaghan, Sponsorship & Community Brand Manager for competition sponsors SuperValu.

The event took place in Skerries Community Centre, with the seaside town in Fingal hosting the Midlands and East for the second straight year. Skerries was the overall winner in 2016, with Birdhill taking the prize this year.

The regional awards on Tuesday was the first official engagement of the new Ardee Tidy Towns commitee since the retirement of former chairman Brendan Matthews, who left the group in an official capacity last month after three decades of service.

In October, it was announced that Matthews and his committee oversaw an improvement in their result from 2016, earning 314 points and a superb silver medal. Ardee moved from 303 points to 314 in Category E (small town), an increase of seven points over the last 12 months and 11 points since 2015. The 2017 score represents their best performance in over a decade.

The town did not drop points in any category. They gained points in the ‘Landscaping and Open Spaces’, ‘Wildlife, Habitats and Natural Amenities’ and ‘Sustainable Waste and Resource Management’ categories.

ThisIsArdee.ie understands that the new committee are in the process of seeking a location in the town were medals, awards and certificates from this year and previous years can be put on public display. A previous attempt to house the recognitions in Ardee Library was turned down.
