Sean McDermotts search for a new manager for their 2018 Louth GAA season has lasted just a matter of weeks with the announcement that former player Mark Murray is to take the reigns at the Mountrush clubman.

A popular and well-known club man, Murray played for the Seans in a distinguished playing career and now makes his managerial debut with his hometown club.

His appointment to the top job of the Division 3 side comes after coaching stints with Geraldines GFC, Newtown Blues and closer to home Ardee St Marys. Murray was part of Kieran Quinn’s management team at Pairc Muire, as the Ardee club

“We would like to wish Mark, his management team and players all the best for 2018 and hopefully we will have a successful year,” the club said in a statement on Thursday evening.

The Seans reached the quarter-finals of the Junior Football Championship for the second successive year in 2017 but they couldn’t match their 2016 showing when they exited at the last four stage. A heavy 6-15 to 2-07 defeat to Roche Emmets ended their Championship interest in ignominious fashion.

Defeats to local rivals John Mitchels and Westerns GFC in the group stage threatened their involvement in the last eight, but they qualified bu virtue of a win over Wolfe Tones.

The Mountrush side also experienced an inconsistent league campaign this year, winning four of their 11 Division 3 outings to finish seventh in the 12 team standings. They finished just above rivals Westerns GFC having beaten the Reaghstown outfit in round four.

Previous manager Brian Carroll was appointed in January of 2017 but left the club at the end of the season. In the boardroom, Kevin Carroll Snr has taken over from Barry McMahon as the club’s chairman, with the latter having held the post for two seasons.
