McClean named new Hunterstown Rovers chairman
Sean McClean was named the new Hunterstown Rovers chairman at the club’s Annual General Meeting on Thursday evening, succeeding outgoing chair Paddy Meade at Pairc Baile Fiach.
As expected, it was also announced that local man Jim Matthews could continue at the helm of the senior team for a second year – in his second spell in charge of the club. Matthews’ continuation in the role as senior manager had been decided after the end of the 2017 campaign, with details ironed out between the parties back in November.
Rovers enjoyed an excellent league campaign in 2017, finishing second and missing out on promotion to the top tier only after a playoff defeat to Newtown Blues. They also picked up the Paddy Sheelan Shield by beating O’Raghallaighs – but they did disappoint in the Championship, exiting at the quarter-final stage at the hands of bogey team Clan na Gael.
McClean replaces Meade in the role of chairman after the latter spent 12 months in the role. He took over from Frank Meade for 2017, who himself had spent two years as chair after Noel Carrie’s stint. Amanda Lane and Peter Landy continue in their roles as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. Hunterstown Rovers celebrated 75 years in existence in 2016.
The club’s AGM, held at the Hunterstown Inn, heard that the ongoing Friday Night Bingo and Lotto ticket sales continue to be big earners for the club, helping them maintain a sound financial footing – and ensure plans can be made and acted on to develop all aspects of the club.
Work is also well underway on the club’s brand new 200-seater stand which will be located on the N2 side of the main pitch. The foundation work and frame installation is complete, with concrete work set to get underway after Christmas. It is hoped the stand may be open in time for the new Louth GAA Division 2 league season, which will begin in the Spring.
Last month, Rovers were granted €62,000 of government money via the Sports Capital Grant for developing their existing pitch and the additional of a new 3G surface at Pairc Baile Fiach.
